Exploring Computer Science

Beginner Level, Grades 2 & 3
Dates TBA
3:30pm to 4:30pm

Are you looking for a fun team environment for your daughter to enhance her social emotional skills while learning to code? This class is an easy introduction to computer science that enables the student to create their very own stories and games. Your daughter will snap together graphical programming blocks to make characters animate on her device screen.

Computer or Chromebook is required (no iPad, limited Chromebooks are available for rental)

Building Games in Scratch

Beginner Level, Grades 4 & 5
Dates TBA
4:30pm to 5:30pm

In this program, your daughter will develop strategic thinking in computer science by working through challenges to build persistence and confidence. She will learn about the design process, use creativity, and learn to use block-based code (e.g. Scratch). She will use her imagination to animate projects, make a storyboard, and learn the basic concepts of coding, as well as how computer science intersects with everyday living and how it involves multidisciplinary skills (e.g., music, art, physical education).

Computer or Chromebook is required (no iPad, limited Chromebooks are available for rental).

Coding in Python for Middle Schoolers

Beginner Level, Grades 6, 7, & 8
Virtual Office Hours:

Python is a widely used computer science language used in the professional setting. Your daughter will learn the basics of Python in this class. She will master drawing shapes to make designs and creations and get ready to begin basic animations in the next eight-week session class.

Computer is required (no iPad, a limited number of rental computers are available).

Coding in Python for High Schoolers

Grades 9-12

We will teach students the basics of programming, work through interesting problems to solve as a team and individually, and learn what women are doing today in their computer science professional career. No prior programming experience is required.

Inspire HER

Whether you’re coming to us as a pre-K teacher, a librarian, or a math teacher, you can be a computer scientist. HER Academy trains and empowers you to be a confident expert, able to adapt our lesson plans to suit your students’ diverse learning styles and interests.

Scholarship Opportunity

Thanks to a Community Action Grant from Facebook’s New Albany Data Center, teachers in Franklin and Licking counties in Ohio can apply for scholarships to take HER Academy’s 2021-22 TEAM Trainings at no cost to their school district.
